The Ogboinbiri community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has been thrown into mourning following the killing of former Youth President, Mr. Dennis Ofolo, amid a protracted chieftaincy crisis in the area.
Community sources said Ofolo, a prominent youth leader, was allegedly murdered as tensions over the traditional leadership dispute escalated.
Residents described the deceased as a peaceful and selfless leader who, during his tenure as Youth President, promoted unity and advocated for youth welfare in Ogboinbiri. His death has been described as a major setback for the community and its younger population.
Community stakeholders have expressed concern that the prolonged chieftaincy conflict is heightening unrest in the riverine settlement. They called for urgent intervention by security agencies, the Bayelsa State Government, and traditional authorities to forestall further violence.
Residents are demanding a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ofolo’s death and are urging authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
There are also appeals for calm, particularly among youths, amid fears of reprisal attacks following the incident. Some residents warned that continued violence over leadership disputes could undermine peace and development in the community.
The killing of Ofolo comes weeks after violent youth clashes in Ogboinbiri reportedly claimed the life of another young man. Footage of that incident showed youths engaged in violent confrontations, heightening concerns over insecurity in the area.
